Artemisia annua - Native to southeastern Europe, this annual herb is a mainstay of the everlasting garden with its famous pungent clean scent. Fine lacy mid green foliage grows on strong stems to a full season height of 4 to 5 feet. The tiny pale yellow flowers gather in clusters at the top. Harvest before the seed matures by cutting at the bottom to dry. Used in wreath making and for potpourri. Also used in China for thousands of years, where it is known as qing-hao. It has been used as an anti malaria medicine with great success right up to modern times. Helpful with other fevers , has an anti-bacterial action and helps with indigestion. Dried leaves with stems are used as an insect repellent when hung indoors. Plant this tiny seed warm and indoors in early spring, just covering with soil. It is a slow germinator. Find a sunny well drained location with good rich soil for large plants.
