This was our very first saved seed. We've been maintaining it for over 30 years, and with good reason! This very rare heirloom starts looseleaf and forms an open butterhead at maturity. Delicious and sweet at all stages. The colour starts green and very quickly develops bronze overtones. The colour gets more vibrant in cooler weather. This is one of the most cold-tolerant varieties. Extend your season using a cloche or cold frame. Can overwinter in Zone 8.
Direct Sow in early spring or late summer 1/4 inch deep. Can also start late winter indoors in small cells to transplant. The compact growth habit is ideal in smaller spaces. Transplant 6 inches apart.

About our Seed Packets
We use simple thick Kraft paper envelopes and sealed plastic bags to protect seeds from light and moisture. They are shipped in bubble wrap envelopes for extra protection. Store them in a cool dry place in this packaging for an extended shelf life.
