Brassica rapa var. niposinica
Very fast growing, cold tolerant Japanese mustard green for salads. Lovely ornamental serrated leaf shape with pale green stalks. Mild flavour in cool weather. Easy to grow and productive.
This green is a must-have for early spring, fall and winter growing. It grows surprisingly well in cold conditions and withstands our west coast winter rains. It's easy to start and grow, and provides an abundance of salad greens in a hurry. Individual leaves can be harvested at the desired stage, or whole plants cut about 2" above the ground to regrow. For a "once and done" harvest of the whole plant, we recommend cutting at the base of the plant to sever the root rather than pulling — this keeps the plant cleaner. Flavour is mild and texture crisp. Becomes spicier with hotter weather.
Fun fact: mizuna was grown on the International Space Station in 2019! Read more here:

Growing: Direct seed or transplant. Direct seeding is easier if you plan to harvest at the baby leaf stage. Can be started from early to late spring or early fall. Sow 1/4" deep. For baby greens, plan for final spacing of around 1" between plants. For plants to be harvested at a larger size, space plants around 6-8" apart. If grown in fertile soil, may not need any fertilizer.
Dry growing (growing without irrigation): Not recommended for summer growing, irrigated or not. If grown in the cool, rainy season, mizuna may not need any irrigation, depending on the water holding capacity of the soil.
