Tanacetum balsamata - This is also known as Bible Leaf and its use has been traced back to ancient times. The highly scented oval leaves are soft grey in colour and form a dense low growing bush. The flowering stalks grow 2-3 feet tall and are topped with lots of small white flowers, in early summer. The fresh leaves are used sparingly in salads and as a flavouring agent in soups and stews. A refreshing tea is made with fresh or dried leaves. Used in potpourris and to keep closets fresh. Used as an antiseptic and an insecticide. An easy to grow perennial, hardy to Zone 4, start indoors in early spring. Thrives in hot, dry conditions once established.
