We think Carinata has superior texture to kale – it’s less fibrous.

Works well as a salad green or cooked green. For those putting food by, blanching and freezing during peak summer yield is a good way to preserve the harvest. Try making Carinata chips!

Carinata is believed to have originated as a spontaneous cross between two other Brassica species. It is known for its wide environmental adaptation and resistance to heat, drought, and pest pressures. It is receiving major interest as a commercial oilseed crop.

Growing:

Can be direct sown or transplanted, depending on your goal. For baby leaf production, direct sow in rows 1/2" to 1" apart from mid-spring onward. For large individual plants, transplant 1-2' apart and selectively harvest leaves. I do not have experience yet to know exactly how frost-tolerant it is, but online information suggests it has some frost tolerance. Once bolting begins, plants won’t produce more leaves.

Dry growing (growing without irrigation):

I have a few volunteer Carinata plants growing in sandy soil that haven't received any irrigation. They are about 30" high and look quite good. With fertile soil and a spring start when the soil has lots of moisture, I think dry growing should be feasible. Space more widely than if irrigating. Under drought stress, expect them to taste spicier, so best quality will be from late-spring harvests.
