The historic cucumber was so popular it sowed a whole cuke category. Highly disease resistant, nearly spineless, sweet flavor, productive slicing cucumber. Beit Alpha was developed in Israel by Hanka Lazarson in the 1930s to produce uniform sweet-slicing cucumbers. Cucumbers are 6-8", crunchy, and not bitter. Many Beit Alpha imitators exist, but this is close to the original. A good cucumber for reduced irrigation.
Growing: Transplant or direct seed.
Transplanting: sow 1" deep and use bottom heat for good germination. Transplant when plant has 1-2 true leaves, with 1-2' between plants in rows or blocks. Weather must be warm for plants to go out. Harden off.
Direct seeding: Plant 2-3 seeds, 1" deep, in each planting hole. Planting holes should be 1-2' apart. Thin to strongest plant for each planting hole.
Growing tips: Cucumbers grow fast in warm temperatures. Wait to start until weather has warmed up. Row cover or plastic speeds early establishment. Mulch ground with straw, landscape fabric, or trellis for nicest cucumbers. Dry growing (growing without watering or minimal watering): This variety is recommended for dry growing by Gary Nabhan in his excellent book "Growing Food in a Hotter, Drier Land: Lessons from Desert Farmers on Adapting to Climate Uncertainty." For best dry growing success, grow in rich soil, fertilize with a balanced fertilizer, space plants 2-3' apart, mulch soil to reduce evaporation, keep well weeded, and shield plants from wind.
