Sweet ’n Spicy ‘Amish Bottle' Onion
Allium cepa
Limited time only. Endangered. My dear friend, a self-described "onion aficionado," raved about her taste test of these onions. And indeed, they are uniquely tasty: a balanced play of sweet and pungent/spicy that makes them a culinary joy. Not quite an onion, not quite a shallot, these heirloom onions are cylindrical and grow up to 1.5" in diameter and 6" tall depending on conditions. Their shape makes chopping easy and perfect for roasting or grilling whole. Historical information is scarce, but what we know is the Amish in Pennsylvania have stewarded it for many generations.
Growing: Onions are slow growing. Start late winter to early spring indoors in flats. Transplant 4" apart into fertile soil once the danger of frost has passed. Harvest at desired size. Unharvested onions divide and eventually flower.
Dry growing (growing without irrigation): We haven't experimented with dry growing these onions. For best results, we imagine an extra early start, transplanting into heavier, moisture-retentive but well structured soil, and a long, mild spring would yield the best results. Transplanting into a greenhouse for extra early spring warmth may also help.
Thank you to Heritage Harvest Seed for sourcing and stewarding this variety.
