'Whipple' Dry Bean DF
Phaseolus vulgaris
Seeds per packet: ~20
"DF" indicates seed for this variety was produced without irrigation. By doing so, we hope epigenetic changes will be triggered to further enhance this variety's inherent genetic resistance to drought stress. For more scientific information, see, for example: https://www.mdpi.com/2223-7747/10/6/1226.
Vigorous bush bean for dry bean production in reduced irrigation situations. Also does well with irrigation. Whipple produces large, plump, maroon speckled beans. A consistently good performer in OSU’s dry farming trials. According to Adaptive Seeds, that has stewarded this variety for several years: “The Whipple Family, for which this bean is named, worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr. before moving to Douglas County, Oregon, in the 1970s.”
Growing info: Plant late spring-early summer once soil has warmed up. If you are unsure, do a small test planting of a few beans to see if they germinate. Grow in rows with a short trellis or no trellis. Plant 1” deep with plants spaced 3” apart.
Dry growing info: For best yields, plant into fertile, well-drained soil as early as possible. The current dry farming spacing recommendation is 6” spacing between plants. A fertigation of potassium can increase yields. Beans are also responsive to zinc fertilizer.
