Phaseolus vulgaris
Playful mix of coloured dry beans adapted to growing without irrigation. Developed by Carol Deppe, renowned vegetable breeder, author, and Chair of the Open Source Seed Initiative. See more on the history: https://osseeds.org/ossi_variety/beefy-resilient-grex/.
Beefy Resilient Grex was one of the test varieties in the 2025 Pacific Coastal Dry Farming Collaborative dry farming trials. On our site, it produced about 5lbs for a 50’ row with plants spaced 6” apart. We feel its potential yield is higher, however; we had to pull the plants early because of impending rain. Harvested mid-September from a May 24 planting. Plants are short vines that may be grown on a short trellis or left to sprawl on the ground; they seem to do just fine with that.
OSSI Pledged: You have the freedom to use these OSSI-Pledged seeds in any way you choose. In return, you pledge not to restrict the use of these seeds or their derivatives by patents or other means, and to include this Pledge with any transfer of these seeds or their derivatives.
Growing: Plant late spring-early summer once soil has warmed up. If you are unsure, do a small test planting of a few beans to see if they germinate. Grow in rows with a short trellis or no trellis. Plant 1” deep with plants spaced 3” apart.
Dry growing: For best yields, plant into fertile, well-drained soil as early as possible. The current dry farming spacing recommendation is 6” spacing between plants. A fertigation of potassium can increase yields. Beans are also responsive to zinc fertilizer.
DF (dry farming) indicates seed for this variety was produced without irrigation. By doing so, we hope epigenetic changes will be triggered to further enhance this variety's inherent genetic resistance to drought stress.
