Attractive large blue squash on vigorous vines and good winter storage.
Modern version of Oregon heirloom bred for organic growing. Thick flesh with sweet flavour that improves with storage. 6 months+ storage potential. Open Source Seed Initiative pledged variety.
Growing: Transplant or direct seed (recommended). Transplant: start transplants 7-10 days before you intend to put them out. Plant 1" deep and use bottom heat, such as a heat mat. Transplant once the seedlings have small true leaves. Space plants 2' apart in rows 6' apart. Harden off before putting out. Direct seeding: After danger of frost has passed and weather has warmed up (late spring to early summer) sow clumps of 2-3 seeds 1" deep, spaced 2' in rows 6' apart. Thin each clump to the strongest plant.
Growing tips: Grows long vines, so give them space. Fertile soil is best, and regular fertilizing makes them most productive. Harvest once vines are starting to die down in fall, but before any frost. Cure for 1 week in warm and dry conditions to harden the skin, then 3 more weeks in cool (12-15° C) and dry conditions for best flavour. Keep storage temperature above 10° C.
Dry growing (growing without watering or minimal watering): Increase between-plant spacing and mulch soil to decrease evaporation. For fewer, but larger, fruit, thin to 1 squash per plant.
