Apocynum cannibinum. This Native American perennial fiber plant is indigenous to southern coastal regions of British Columbia. Stings were made by stripping the 4-foot stems to create twine. The leaves are small ovals that fill the spreading branches. Pretty small white clusters of ball flowers in mid-summer are followed by long green thin seed pods. Loves full sun and marginal soils and is one of the most drought tolerant plants once established. It is quite showy and has created much interest at the entrance to our farm. It does spread by runners underground, but not quickly. The plant has a milky latex which has been used as gum. The green fruit are used as a heart medicine, but use caution, very similar to digitalis. Traditionally used for kidney issues. The roots have been used in small doses to strengthen the heart. Sow the small rectangle seed in spring where you wish to plant it and tamp them in well. Keep them evenly moist. Can also be started in flats. Just cover them with soil. Rarely offered. Seed packet about 25 seeds.
