Oenothera biennial
Native to Europe and North America, classed as a biennial. Forms a rosette of long pointed leaves followed by tall flower spikes to 4 feet. A profuse summer bloomer of yellow open-faced flowers that open and close with the changing light. Very attractive to beneficial insects. Drought tolerant.
All parts are useful. Fresh first year roots are a sweet and spicy addition to soups and stir fry. Leaves are added to salads along with the flowers. The seeds are a rich source of essential fatty acids and sprinkled as a condiment.
Medicinally, a very important anti inflammatory, a treatment for migraines, PMS, and menopause. An ideal feminine tonic can be used regularly. A high mucilage content, so ideal for treating indigestion.
Easy to grow in sunny locations direct sow the small seeds in spring barely covered as light is needed for best germination. Just press the seeds into the soil. Can self-sow in warmer locations if you are harvesting the seeds. We allow a spot in the garden for them to naturalize on their own.
