Valeriana officinalis - This medicinal perennial herb is a very ornamental addition to the flower border. A small bush of bright green leaves emerges in early spring, followed by 5 foot tall flower stems topped with pale peach coloured plumes. Long lasting and very hardy once established. The roots once they have matured at least 2 years are used to relieve pain, sleep disorders and to calm the nervous system. Easy from seed, can plant them directly or start indoors in early spring.
